Californians Must Have Auto Insurance!

Over 5000 persons, on average, are involved in a motor vehicle accident every single day. Motor vehicle accidents start a long, stressful process that may involve physical, emotional, and financial costs. All California motorists are required to have automobile insurance by the law of the State of California.

Californians may not drive legally on California roads unless they have auto insurance. There are severe consequences if they are in an auto accident or stopped by a law enforcement officer without proof of insurance. In this situation, the offense may be serious resulting in steep fines and a driver’s license and registration may be suspended. The police may also impound a vehicle if a driver is operating it without liability insurance.

California requires drivers to carry, minimally, bodily injury and property damage coverage (see below), and insurance companies must offer customers uninsured motorist bodily injury and property damage coverage:

  • Bodily Injury Liability Coverage: $15,000 per person / $30,000 per accident minimum;
  • Property Damage Liability Coverage: $5,000 minimum.

California Insurance Code (CIC) § 1861.02 states that “Good Drivers” will receive at least a 20% discount on their auto insurance premium. Drivers that carry collision coverage on their car may be eligible for the California Deductible Waiver. If so, their insurance carrier will pay the collision deductible if an uninsured driver causes an accident.
